HELLO CRUMPETERS!!!

I've received an e-mail from the head of Student Union Activities informing us that all of the clubs are invited to participate in hosting events at Unionfest this year. Unionfest is the large event held on the first evening of Hawk Week (the week between when the dorms open and classes start). LOTS of people go over there, and lots of them are younger folk (like the folk who might join our club and then continue the tradition once all us old fogies leave KU).

Anyway, I'm supposed to e-mail her with ideas for what our club would like to do. I'm thinking that perhaps we can try something along the lines of hosting Wiffle Ball in the Kansas Union Ballroom. It's nice and big, and the wiffleballs should be harmless on the floor and everything. And, seriously, who wouldn't want to tell all their friends they played Wiffle Ball in the KU Union Ballroom? I haven't cleared it with them yet, but if it goes through (either this, or any other activity we might do) we'll need people to be there to tell people about crumpets. I might even work up a little pamphlet thing that we can add to their massive collection of free things the people will be taking with them. Also, if anybody has any ideas of other things we could make and give them for free, that would be good.

Let me know what you think of that idea, or what you think of other ideas that I haven't thought of yet.

Does it have to be something inside the Union?

I know this is radical - but maybe we could have a game of field crumpets.

If I was a freshman, I would rather play wiffleball then something I had no idea what the heck it was. Besides, most people already know the basic rules of wiffleball. Unionfest is all about getting people involved, and I think it would be a hassle to try and recruit people to play and then explain the rules.....

With the playing Crumpets, where would we play? Perhaps the front line of Frasier. That's kinda close to the union.

Robbie...if you work up a pamphlet, make sure I get plenty. I plan on doing some MAJOR recruitment as an Ellsworth RA. Maybe even get P. Quinn in on it, too.

I don't know if you've been to Unionfest, but pretty much everything needs to be in the union or immediately next to an entrance/exit to the union. This is where everyone will be, and if we're not there they won't see us. Also, it will be after dark (the thing starts at 9pm), so we won't be able to do anything outside. Finally, the nature of the thing is to walk around and see as much as possible. We'd be kind of like an advertiser. We'll probably have about 2 minutes per person to get their attention and keep it. If that 2 minutes is spent explaining the rules to the game, then we've probably lost them to the free food and coke that will be given out. Also, should our spot prove to be very popular, wiffle ball can accomodate lots of people pretty easily (only needing one bat at a time) while crumpets could run out of space. I'm not shooting to give them a feel of the club, but rather just to get everyone to have fun and to associate that fun time with the Crumpets Club. Then they can read the pamphlet and check the web page to get more info on what the club actually does.

Wiffle ball in the ballroom sounds great! Later in the week, on Wednesday evening, there's the Beach'N'Boulevard deal where all of the clubs go and put up tables and booths and stuff. Maybe that Wednesday, we could see if we could play crumpets on the Frazer lawn, because it'd be fairly close to the main action. I might be getting confused with the Open House, but aren't there activities that have stuff up in front of Stauffer-Flint and Watson? That's pretty close....

We could invite all of the wiffle ballers to join us for a game just a few days later. Playing at Frazer lawn would definitely expose us to the schol-hall crowd and the girls (ow ow!) from Corbin-GSP who'd have to walk by to get to the Beach thing. We might be able to play at the Allen Fieldhouse lawn before a mixer at Oliver or something, tool

Well - originally the crumpets video things were meant as recruitment, so if we did have the opportunity, we could set up a TV running the two that we have and possibly more if I get them done. Just a thought.

After that - definalty take out 30 second ad durring the superbowl.

But if we pay for a superbowl ad, we can't afford Buffalo Wild Wings after the game... or any game... ever again... ever.
Much luck with the recruitment, folks. I'll keep you posted on my progress over here.

OK. It doesn't look like they're going to let wiffle ball in the Union fly. So we'll need another idea if we're going to participate in Unionfest. Help me out please! I don't have any stellar ideas.

Ok. here are some ideas.

1. bean bag toss.
have a cardboard cut-out of a crumpet player silouette with holes in it (say, 3). To win a prize, the student will have to get a beanbag in each hole. I don't know what we'd use for prizes

2. that's all for now. sorry!!!

OK, I e-mailed this to a lot of you shortly ago. In case you missed it...

Hey gang. I just found out that we could be entitled
to share some patio space on the first floor of the
Union with the Water Polo team for KU's Unionfest.
This is a great opportunity for the crumpets club to
get some much needed publicity. Anyway, I'm going to
sign the form tomorrow saying that we want to do it,
so if you don't think we want to, you'd better get
ahold of me tonight or tomorrow morning.

Now, we also need some ideas of what to do. We'll be
outside the union, but the area will be lit. Patrick
and I were thinking that we could download some
footage onto a laptop and play that, and have some
fliers to pass out, and then just rely on us standing
there with bats to attract attention.

Finally, we need people to help work it! You are all
on this list because you meet the (admittedly loose)
definition of a member of the crumpets club. I know
some of us will want to actually attend unionfest.
You can do that, I'm just asking that people take some
shifts at the patio, then we can take turns seeing
what else is to be seen. The fest is from 9-12, so if
we get 12 volunteers, we can have 2 people at the
patio at all times and nobody will have to work more
than 30 minutes. That's not so bad, is it?

The date on the Unionfest is Sunday August 15th. We'd
need to have our stuff set up by 8:00pm, and there
would be a little meeting at that time, but I don't
think all of us would need to be there. The actual
festivities begin at 9pm, so that's when we'd need to
start manning the spot.

So, to start with, I'd like to know who will be
able/willing to help out with this (please, if you are
able, I ask that you be willing to do just a little
bit for this). After we see how many people we'll
have, I can set up some sort of sign-up sheet with
shift lengths based on the number of people we'll
have. So, the more people we have, the less everyone
has to sit at the table.

Finally, for those who plan to attend crumpets on
Monday, we'll need to discuss several things before we
leave (and you need to not let me forget this).

1) We need to decide when we want to meet each week
for the fall semester. That way I can put it on the
fliers for Unionfest (see how this all fits together?)
2) We need to elect officers. We'll definitely need a
new VP, since that was Peter. Then, if you guys are
sick of me as president, we can choose a new one. And
if Kristin O. is tired of being treasurer...not that
she's done anything yet, but you know.

Please get back to me soon on this,

Robbie

In response to Melissa's idea, maybe we could give out crumpet sticks to the first five people who sign up for the club or something...just an idea for a neat way to lose some wiffle bats.
